The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, [b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
The scripture is very clear on how the Apostles increased in number and filled the church all over the world. It was by being full of the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. There were miracles, healings, prophecy, words of knowledge to guide there followers. Speaking in tongues was accepted as by all.
Isaiah 55: 7-8
7 Let the wicked forsake their way,
and sinners their thoughts;
Let them turn to the LORD to find mercy;
to our God, who is generous in forgiving.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways
Gods Spirit is not normal it is the real truth. It is not church traditions, and cannot be put into a box. It will cause controversy and stir communication and change. Wonder if the Apostles would ever have guessed that the church, they started would loose so much touch with God’s Holy Spirit. Also persecute the Spirit filled and treat them as the Jewish leaders did Jesus.
In the 1970’s there was a move of the Holy Spirit that touched many Christians of all religions. It was a time of real confusion on the role of women, church teaching, morality, and real rebellion to any traditions in our country. The media played a role in selling every manner of evil in movies and T.V. Our church leaders were fearful to speak against anything, for fear of upsetting anyone with the truth. So God poured out his Holy Spirit on a select few of the church. Many church leaders were fearful and refused to accept it as a move of God. All religions spoke against speaking in tongues and other manifestations of the Holy Spirit. It was the same persecutions as in the time of Jesus.
Charismatics were left with searching out teachings from any religion that talked about the Holy Spirits fruits and manifestations of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Since all religions think they are the only truth, much confusion and strife was stirred by pointing out the flaws of certain religious traditions. Many Charismatics became arrogant and defensive trying to be heard and understood and not ridiculed. They received abusive comments or were ignored completely. Some just left religion totally saying they did not need organized religion.
The Spirit Filled (Charismatic) were feared by many and left without shepherds to guide and teach them. They were left to learning from anywhere that claimed to be knowledgeable and were accepting of them. Some Pastors said that all Charismatics were crazy and so the clergy sent the mentally ill into their prayer meetings. These church leaders would say if it is from God it will last. What a cop out!!!! Making fun and mocking the Charismatics and avoiding the Spirit Filled person was commonplace. Do any of these Pastors feel the loss of Charismatics in their churches now? Everyone struggles and prayes for acceptance. No one likes to be treated like they do not exist or that they are evil. Why did these church leaders allow the Life in the Spirit Seminars if they did not want Spirit Filled Christians in their churches? Were they confused too? What ever their reasons, it wounded many.
There were Charismatic retreats and Charismatic conferences that had teachings, consolation and healing. However when they went back to their churches, they received the same attitude and abusive treatment.
As the years went by the conferences went from 5000 to 500. There were no more prayer meetings in the churches to be found. The remnant now has a hard time finding Spirit Filled Fellowship. One person was told they were not allowed to speak in tongues at a life in the spirit seminar. How can these Pastors make such rules and call themselves Christians?
The Conferences now are few and 300 or less attend, mostly senior citizens. Where are the young? Why have Church leaders regarded this move of Holy Spirit so terrible? Don’t they see what has happened to this world by such overwhelming evil? Why would anyone want to get rid of the move of the Holy Spirit out of fear?
The remnant left now does not upset any church leaders and walks in constant fear of offending the powerful pastor. The Holy Spirit does not go where it is not wanted and therefore no fruits of the Holy Spirit are present.
Charismatics should have been thankful for those who made them humble instead of leaving the church. It should never be forgotten that Jesus was envied and crucified for radical thoughts of loving others. It is hard to understand jealous Christian leaders but obedience is the core of holiness. We must all pray for good attitudes and humble responses to religious cruelty. Father forgive them for they know not what they do.
First John 3:17 “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Words from our mouths may wound others deeply, into the depths of another persons heart and may take years to heal. Sometimes they never heal. Teachers or parents who belittle a child’s intelligence, by calling them stupid or ignorant can cause them damage for years. Those who knock another persons religion, create divisions, and hatred , could cause wars. Those who make fun of the elderly, special, or handicapped persons by calling them names, appears to be the rule rather than the exception.
Managing our tongue requires much prayer and practice. We cannot change others from making wicked statements.
James 3:8 ” But no human being can tame the tongue full of deadly poison.” The stories of teens making fun, mentally and physically torturing them to point of suicide.
Proverbs 8: 21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and who loves it will eat its fruits.” These suicides cannot be healed, it is too late. There are so many wounds for a family to grasp, that are confronting our youth today. My prayers are with them all.
We have so many serious disconnects in our society. Road Rage for example; Having to make sure you do not offend someone or they will verbally abuse or shoot you. How did we get this wicked? Our children feel free to be rude verbally to everyone, demonstrating no respect. Parents that verbally and physically abuse their children can seriously damage their self image causing lower self esteem. We all have witnessed it and we all have done it at one time or another. We find it easier to say mean things than to complement someone else. Lets encourage one another and praise God for all he has given us.
Matthew 12:36-37 “I tell you on the day of Judgement people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be condemned.”
I am always surprised when Christians compete and gossip about me. Recently I was gossiped about and it hurt me deeply. So deeply that I move away on the scripture. If they do not accept you wipe the dust from your feet and move to the next town. We were deeply hurt, no one would listen to how we felt. It was like we were outcasts of friends. Hopefully you are not thinking that we deserved it. Because we did not!!! The message from Pope Francis came out at that time. His words were very healing for me. It is obvious he had same problem with gossip. This website is here to share your hurt with any wound. I hope that I am not the only one that is sharing!!!!!
Pope Francis wrote
” We have as it were of one heart and one soul: That unity, unanimity and harmony of feelings of love, mutual love, thinking “others are better than me” , and this is lovely isn’t it?”
But this does not happen automatically after Baptism. It must be brought about within us, “on the journey through life by the Spirit”. “This gentleness is a somewhat forgotten virtue: being gentle, making room for others. There are so many enemies of gentleness, aren”t there? Starting with gossip. When people prefer to tell tales, to gossip about others, to give others a few blows. These are daily events that happen to everyone, and to me too”. “They are temptations of the evil one.” he continued, “who does not want the Spirit to create this gentleness, in Christian communities. In the parish the ladies of cathechesis quarrel with the ladies of Caritas” These conflicts always exist, in the family, in the neighborhood, even among friends. And this is not new life. When the Spirit causes us to be born to new life, he makes us gentle and kind, not judgmental: the only Judge is the Lord”. The proposal to be silent fits in here. “If I have something to say, let me say it to the individual, not to the entire neighborhood; only to the one who can remedy the situation”.
“This”, Pope Francis concluded, “is only one step. If , with the grace of the Spirit, we succeed in never gossiping, it will be great and beautiful step ahead and will do everyone good. Let us ask the Lord to show us and th world the beauty and fullness of this new life of being born of the Spirit, of treading each other with kindness, with respect. Let us ask for this grace for us all.
